Autodesk posts a little walkthrough for using Project Khan in Autodesk Maya 2014. Project Khan is a prototype cloud-based LOD (Level of Detail) tool that will reduce and optimize models while still offering high quality results.

configure an optimization job, securely execute that job on the cloud, and then immediately download the optimized asset into a Maya scene

Khan goes beyond simple object mesh decimation, by a long shot. Khan not only reduces the mesh but also reduces texture and rig complexity as well. Autodesk is intending this technology for creating and optimizing assets for run time performance, typically used in game and animation workflows.

Project Khan for 3D Asset Optimization in the cloud

Project Khan is offered as a technology preview for Maya 2014. You can send models off to the cloud in batches, and have them come back much more efficient, being optimized by Khan’s algorithms.

Autodesk partnered with Donya Labs AB, using their Simplygon technology. Simplygon is meant to provide high quality LOD creation capabilities to game developers working on high end titles. The project is being floated to see if there will be any type of demand for such asset optimization services within the industry.

Project Khan is being provided as free access until March 31 2014 initially for Maya 2014 as a plugin. However Autodesk are considering extending Khan to 3ds Max, Maya, and Maya LT users. You can find out more information on Project Khan on the Autodesk Labs site here.
