You can create quite a few things in After Effects using only effects. That is to say, you don’t need to start with an image at all. You can create something out of practically nothing. A perfect example of this is this new quick tip tutorial from Nidia Dias. The tip shows how you can make procedural animated textures using pyre effects.

The technique is one that Dias showcased in a workshop at Adobe Max — working procedurally like this leaves a lot of opportunities to experiment and have some happy accidents.
