How to Get Clean Meshes Using Instant Meshes

Glen Southern shows how you can automatically retopologize models using the free Instant Meshes app.

A new tutorial from SouthernGFX (Glen Southern) walks through creating clean topology by using Instant Meshes. “Whether you are using an iPad to sculpt with programs like Nomad Sculpt or Forger App or a desk-bound solution like Blender, there comes a time where you need a good, clean mesh with flowing edge loops.” Southern says.

“If you want to pose your mesh, it really helps to have clean topology, and at the end, when you want to UV unwrap it, it is essential to have a low poly retopo’ed (I’m not sure that’s even a word in English!) model.”

Instant Meshes is a free app that automatically creates retopology, much like the remesher in Zbrush. The underlying driver of the app is based on Instant Field-Aligned Meshes by Wenzel Jakob, Marco Tarini, Daniele Panozzo, Olga Sorkine-Hornung as seen in ACM Transactions on Graphics (Proceedings of SIGGRAPH Asia 2015).
